BY THE NUMBERS |
In the November 2011 auction, Dupuis achieved the highest ever total results of $4,900,000. The previous record was $3,700,000 set just five months earlier in June 2011. The auction sold 80% by lot—the fifth consecutive auction in which 80% or more of lots were sold.
The mood was upbeat at Dupuis's auction as bidders took comfort in the solid strength of the collection on offer emphasizing the traditional appeal of high quality and uniqueness.
The 368 registered bidders—some from Canada, the USA, Belgium, France, Spain, England, Germany, India, East Asia, and Dubai—competed for the 663 lots offered for sale. The general feeling was good, old-fashioned pragmatism, anticipating that value and beauty could be theirs at the right prices.
WHITE DIAMONDS
A 4.18-ct, D/VVS-1, diamond ring, fetched an impressive hammer price of $180,000. This converts to $43,000/ct. Only one other white diamond has sold for more per carat, but it was double the size at 8.62-ct. That diamond sold at $46,400/ct in 2010.
COLOURED DIAMONDS
A diamond ring by Ellis Bros., circa 1925, featured on the catalogue cover was certified by the Gemological Institute of America as fancy vivid yellow, VS1. This 5.19-ct gem attracted anxious bidding and fetched $200,000—a record $38,500/ct for a vivid yellow diamond. A fancy blue 0.98-ct diamond, the first certified blue diamond ever sold at Dupuis, fetched $85,000 exceeding its estimate of $50,000– $60,000. At $86,700/ct, the marquise-cut stone realized the highest per carat price for any diamond sold in company history.
NATURAL PEARLS
The element of surprise was evident in the room as the audience, with their sharp intakes of breath punctuated by oohs and aahs, watched as a quick succession of natural pearl jewels were hammered down at multiple times their estimates. A necklace sold for $130,000—a record for a natural pearl jewel. The previous record was $80,000 for a pair of natural pearl earrings in 2010. |
COLOURED STONES
A 7.62-ct Burmese ruby of rare pigeon blood red colour achieved $800,000—the highest ever price for a coloured gemstone in Canada. This record far exceeded the previous record of $200,000 for another ruby in June 2011. A 13.69-ct sapphire of Ceylon origin sold for a record $5,000/ct while the record per carat price for a Burmese sapphire stands at $5,900 for a stone of 15.89 cts that sold in June 2011.
BRAND NAME RECOGNITION
Items from the top tier design houses were well represented in the collection. Pendants and brooches by Van Cleef & Arpels included a charming yellow sapphire teddy bear that sold for $3,600, and an elegant flower diamond pin that had an estimate of $25,000–$30,000 and hammered to a persistant telephone bidder for $42,000. Cartier jewels both recent and vintage proved popular: the tricoloured gold bangle bracelets, a quintessential Cartier design, had a loyal following of strong bidders; while a strap bracelet in pink gold, circa 1940, sold for $8,000, over double its pre-sale estimate.
Highly desired by savvy buyers were all manner of diamond items by Tiffany & Co., especially their pendant necklaces and earrings with delicate filigree key, swirl, floral and heart motifs.
UPSCALE RECYCLE and REUSE
Tapping into the growing awareness internationally of the prestige resale jewellery market, Dupuis auctions exceeded expectations with renewed vigour each and every session. The complete sale results for this and previous auctions can be accessed online at www.dupuis.ca.
"While diamond prices continue to be strong, the greatest surprise of the auction was the broad interest and highly competitive bidding for coloured stones and natural pearls," said Ron Dupuis, senior jewellery specialist.
Following the unprecedented success of the 2011 auctions, Dupuis is currently preparing consignments for our Spring 2012 auction. For over 25 years, buyers and sellers have placed their trust in Dupuis's market expertise and the firm's specializing exclusively in fine jewellery. |
